Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you’ll know about Wordle.

It’s a web-based word game created by Josh Wardle in which players are given six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Coloured tiles tell you if your guesses are correct or not. It has taken the world by a storm, so much so that The New York Times handed over an undisclosed seven-figure sum last month to buy it.

Wordle has inspired a host of clones, and also some cool porting projects. @ghidraninja, for example, has just made the game playable on the Game Boy. All you need is a flash cart and you’re away.

You can also play this version online via a web browser. According to @ghidraninja, “the ROM size is very limited, so I couldn’t fit in a big wordlist of “real” words. Instead, I’m using a bloom filter to check (with, admittedly, currently a very high error-rate) whether an entered word is one of the 8000 most common English words.”

The inspiration for this venture? An even more obscure port of Wordle:

What device can we expect to see Wardle’s masterpiece on next? A fridge freezer? A washing machine? Place your bets now.

Oh, and while we’re on the topic, did you know that Wordle (kinda) existed on the Game Boy in 1994? Check out Lingo:
