Nintendo Reports That More 3DS Games Launched Last Year Than In 2020

If you thought it was all over for the 3DS, think again. Nintendo’s marvellous handheld is still hanging in there, despite the fact that production of the console ceased in 2020, and that the eShop will be closing next year. That hasn’t dampened developers’ spirits, however, as Nintendo has reported that the console got eight brand new games in the fiscal year of 2021/22.

Axios’ Stephen Totilo shared the figures on Twitter, which shows that this is an increase compared to the last two fiscal years. Both the 2020/21 and the 2019/20 period only saw two new 3DS games launches each, so we got four times as much 3DS in the last year!

None of these games are first-party Nintendo titles, of course, but it’s amazing to see the efforts of smaller developers who continue to work on older systems. One game that launched in the last year is Moonbound, an arcade action game where you have to make quick decisions to survive. And there are plenty of other little hidden nuggets like it.

The 3DS will likely still appear on next year’s results too, as there are still new games coming to the 3DS. This April, Fragrant Story — a cheekily titled strategy RPG — became the last 3DS game to be released both digitally and physically in North America. So there will be no more new 3DS boxes to pop on your shelves.

We’ll mourn the 3DS when the eShop eventually closes next March because it was (and is!) a fab little system, so we’re happy to see people still want to make games for the console despite its impending demise.

Go ahead and share your 3DS memories in the comments, and if you’ve bought any brand new releases for the console — including Fragrant Story — then even better!
