Bandai Namco Is Creating A “Gundam Metaverse”

Bandai Namco has just revealed its grand vision for the Gundam metaverse project during the Third Gundam Conference, which was held on March 29th.

The company plans to “develop a metaverse for each IP as a new framework for connecting with fans” with work starting in April. Mobile Suit Gundam is the first IP, and its metaverse will be set in space colonies packed with all sorts of Gundam content – which will include video games, anime, model kits (“Gunpla”) and much more. Users will be able to access these colonies through their virtual avatars and interact with others. Bandai Namco is calling the Gundam metaverse “SIDE-G”.

The metaverse will grow bit-by-bit, with the Gunpla colony opening first. This will be followed by an eSports colony in 2023, focused on the video games Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2 and Gundam Evolution. Plans to expand the project will continue beyond 2026, Bandai Namco says.

Interestingly, Bandai Namco has also stated that the Gundam metaverse will allow other companies to cut themselves a slice of the Gundam pie, while individual users will be able to sell their own content to others, as the Gundam metaverse will allow IP rights relating to the franchise to be preserved.
